Custom Home BuilderWe previously covered what you should look for when researching custom home builders, including location, previous reviews, and that open line of communication.

What happens when you have chosen your builder and it's time to reach out and have that first initial meeting?

A big factor in someone’s choice of a custom home builder is their comfort with the first person they meet from the company, whether it’s the owner or a sales person. Yes, natural rapport is great, but what about those indescribable gut feelings?

When interviewing custom home builders and before signing anything, ask yourself the following questions:

Does the builder...

Look professional?

No, looks aren't everything, but it's important during your initial meeting to sit down with someone who pays attention to detail and takes pride in their work.

Stand by the rules?

With building comes laws, codes, and regulations that must be followed, you need to know that your builder will stand by the rules and not skip over things just to complete the project.

This is important because if your home is not up to code, it can cost you $$$ in the long run if you decide to sell and not to mention the safety concerns.

Clearly communicate their building schedule?

Building a home can be extremely stressful and your emotions can be all over the place. Make sure your builder is completely upfront with you and can give you an exact time frame for when each portion of you project can be expected to be complete.

Commit to keeping you informed?

Yes, your builder may give you a building schedule, but they need to also confirm that they will keep you in the loop. You never know what kind of things can come up. It's important that you and the builder have an honest, ongoing conversation. This will help the building process go smoothly and will keep your stress levels lower.

Have a clear, upfront policy?

A good custom home builder will make sure you understand what change orders will cost, as well as how the builder will communicate any resulting adjustments in the job schedule.

Offer references?

Good, reputable companies will provide you with references so, you can find out what other buyer's experiences were like. This helps provide a more secure feeling when signing your building contract.
